Pte. Robert Louis Garside, died 29th June 1915.

Pte. Robert Louis Garside, 21st Battalion Royal Fusiliers, died in Bagthorpe Isolation Hospital (now part of the City Hospital) on 29th June 1915. He is buried in Nottingham Church Cemetery.

“SPOTTED FEVER AT CLIPSTONE CAMP.

“DEATH OF SOLDIER BAGTHORPE.

“Suffering from cerebro-spinal fever, a patient, Private Garside, of the 24th Batt. Royal Fusiliers, was admitted to the City Isolation Hospital at Bagthorpe on Saturday evening [26th June 1915] last from Clipstone Camp. He died yesterday [29th June 1915].

“The source of infection is unknown, as no previous case has been reported from the camp, though several cases have occurred during the last few weeks in the county of Notts.

“The body will be buried in Nottingham with full military honours on Thursday [1st July 1915].

“Dr. Syer B. White, the resident medical officer at the City Isolation Hospital, is the official bacteriologist appointed by the War Office deal with cases of cerebro-spinal fever in the county.” [1]

He was the 25 year-old son of Thomas Robert and Louisa Garside, of "Four Winds," Westfield, Battle, Sussex. Born at West Wickham, Kent.
