“THE FOOD OF THE PEOPLE.

“Whatever changes come after the war, it must never be forgotten that the greatest industry in the country will have to be safeguarded in order to give stability to the welfare of the nation. However dreadful the war has been, it brings home to the many what the few have been saying for years, viz., that agriculture was always our vital calling in spite of the apathy towards it in the country generally. The man employed in providing the food of the people must never again be ignored in the way he has been in the past. His interests and welfare will have to be looked into by the nation's representatives. In the past the man behind the plough was more or less neglected by the State to the national detriment. Imagination and courage on the part of legislators will do wonders, as we have seen lately, both in the case of the farmer and the farm labourer. Our energies can be directed to no better end than in making those engaged in our greatest industry happy, prosperous, and contented. – H. BOSWORTH, Lenton.”
