The Hon. Alfred Edden, M.P.

On 30th June 1916 it was reported that one-time Hucknall miner and union strike-leader, Alfred Edden, resident in New South Wales since 1879, had been conferred the title 'Honourable' by the King.

“THE HON. ALFRED EDDEN.

“Mr. A. Edden, M.P., is in receipt of a letter from Sir Gerald Strickland, Governor of New South Wales, stating that the King has approved of his retaining the title of "Honourable." The letter which Is dated 27th June, is as follows:-"I have this day received a despatch from the Secretary ot State for the Colonies, intimating that His Majesty the King has been pleased to approve of the retention of the title of 'Honourable' by you in virtue of having served for more than three years as a member of the Executive Council of the State of New, South Wales.' Mr. Bonar Law adds that a notification to this effect will be published in the 'London Gazette.' Will you please accept my congratulations on the distinction that has been conferred upon you by His Majesty." Mr. Edden has replied expressing his gratification at his receipt of the letter, thanking his Excellency for his congratulations, and stating that he will retain with pride and distinction which His Majesty has been pleased to bestow upon him.”
