Sgt. Robert Wilson, 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (formerly of the Robin Hood Rifles, with which unit he landed in France on 28th February 1915), was reported missing on 1st July 1917. His death was confirmed in a memorial notice published on 27th March 1918.
“WILSON. - Reported missing July 1st, 1917, now reported killed on that date after three years' service, Sergt. R. Wilson (Bob), Sherwood Foresters, aged 22, beloved son of Mr. [William] and Mrs. Wilson, 52, Upper Eldon-street. Oh why did they take him so young and so far, from the father and mother who loved him so dear, hard was the blow that compelled us to part, from one so loving and dear to our hearts. - Sadly missed by sorrowing father, mother, sisters, and brothers (Jack in Egypt).” [1]
His body was never identified and he is, therefore, commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
