“THE ALIEN REGISTER.
“MOSCOW “SPANIARD” IN NOTTINGHAM.
“At the Nottingham Summons Court this morning [2nd July 1917] John Thomas Stockton, of 148, Derby-road, was charged with failing to keep an aliens register and with failing to require an alien staying at his house to fill in the necessary particulars. Defendant’s wife Emily, was charged with aiding and abetting him.
“Detective-sergeant Rogers said that he called at defendants’ house on June 15th, when Mrs Stockton admitted that she had neglected to conform with the regulations. The alien in question, a Spaniard named Louis Raskin, told the officer that he asked Mrs. Stockton for a form when went to the house on June 9th, but she put him off, saying she had none.
“Mr. H. B. Clayton, for the defence, caused some amusement when he told the Bench that the Spaniard was born in Moscow, this apparent anomaly being explained by the fact that his parents were Spanish and that he was taken back to Spain and brought up there. He was now in employment in Nottingham.
“A fine of 10s. each on each charge was inflicted - £2 in all.
“Mrs. Maria Atkinson, 43, Goldsmith-street, was fined 10s. on a charge of failing to keep an alien register in respect of a Russian lodging in her house.”
