“THE SEA BATTLE.
“SOUVENIRS FROM H.M.S. NOTTINGHAM.
“Writing to the Mayor of' Nottingham, Captain Charles H. Miller, H.M.S. Nottingham, observes:
“I am sending you the splinter of a German shell of large calibre — about 12 inches — which arrived on board the ship among others on May 31st last. As it has personal interest for me I shall be very grateful if you will let me have it back after the war. I am glad to tell you none of the Nottingham's crew were injured at any time throughout. I am also sending you a photograph of a salvo of German shells striking the sea and a photograph of the officers of this ship which may have some interest for you.
“The letter was read the Nottingham City Council this morning [3rd July 1916], and the photographs were subsequently handed round for inspection.”
