The strike at Newstead pit ended on 3rd July 1918. The dispute came about because men who had worked at the colliery since before the war had been conscripted, while others who had started there since its outbreak were not.

“NEWSTEAD PIT DISPUTE.

“SETTLEMENT REACHED TO-DAY.

“The dispute at Newstead pit, resulting in no coal being turned since last Friday [28th June 1918] has come to an end, and work is to be resumed tomorrow [4th July 1918]. This decision was arrived at during a conference between the management of the pit and the men's representatives to-day. It was further resolved that three men who re-entered the pit in 1914 should be given legal notice to leave.”

'Nottingham Evening Post', 3rd July 1918.
