On 15th July 1918 it was reported that John Robert Clynes, M.P., the Food Controller, might have to face a challenge to his re-election by a candidate standing on an anti-enemy alien ticket.

“FOOD CONTROLLER'S RE-ELECTION.

“The nomination papers of Mr. Clynes for North-East Manchester, which will be handed in to-morrow, will be signed by members of all parties. Though there is a question that a rival candidate should be nominated to fight on the question of internment of enemy aliens, it is not likely to be acted upon.

“Mr. Clynes is unable to leave London for a day or two, but will address a meeting of his constituents on Thursday [19th July 1918].”

'Nottingham Evening Post', 15th July 1918.
