On 29th June 1918 it was reported that a petition to support a plea for clemency was being organised in respect of Pte. Thomas Pole, 9th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, who had been sentenced to death for the murder of his wife's illegitimate baby the previous February.

“THE CARLTON MURDER.

“PETITION FOR THE REPRIEVE OF POLE.

“A petition is being prepared for the reprieve of Thomas Polce, D.C.M., Sherwood Foresters, who was sentenced to death by Mr. Justice Atkin at the Nottingham and Notts. Assizes on Wednesday [26th June 1918] for the murder of his wife's illegitimate baby, and recommended to mercy by the jury.

“Copies are circulated in Carlton and in Nottingham, where Mr. R. A. Young, Pole's solicitor, has taken the matter in hand. He has received an intimation from the Nottingham branch of the Discharged and Demobilised Sailors' and Soldiers' Federation that the members would like to assist in the preparation of the petition.”
