The war affected everyone – even the Thoroton Society, the still going-strong group dedicated to preserving Nottinghamshire’s local history. John Beardsmore, the author of the first history of Hucknall, was a long-standing member.

“The Summer Excursion

“Owing to the exceptional conditions existing almost everywhere on account of the War, the Council thought it well to limit the Society’s journeys entirely to half-day Excursions. On Thursday, therefore, the 29th of June, 1916, an Afternoon Excursion was made to the Church of St. Leodegarius, Old Basford, where the following paper was read by Mr. Harry Gill, at 3 p.m. At 4.30 p.m., there was tea for members in the Church Room, near the Church. After tea, some of the members went on to Bulwell, in order to inspect the old Grammar School, situated close to the tram terminus.”
